Coaches and officials can now apply for $1.6 million in grants

Coaches and officials can now apply for $1.6 million in grants

Young coaches and officials can now apply for their share of the Australian Sports Commission's (ASC's) annual $1.6 million Local Sporting Champion grants — an Australian Government initiative to support junior sport. Previously only available to young athletes, the Local Sporting Champions grants eligibility criteria has been broadened to recognise the importance of supporting young coaches and officials — crucial to Australia's sporting grass roots.                   The grants of $500 per individual and $3000 per team are available to help meet costs such as travel, equipment, uniforms, and accommodation. To be eligible to apply, applicants must be aged between 12-18 years and travelling more than 250km to participate as an athlete, coach, umpire or referee in upcoming state or national level sporting competitions. The grants support young people participating, coaching or officiating in official state or national sporting competitions and are administered by the ASC in association with Local Members of Parliament.

Applications for the 2009/10 grant cycle are now open.

Visit the Local Sporting Champions program website for further information including application form and eligibility criteria

Australian Teams Championships 2009 Article by Rob Bidmeade

TOP seed South Australia produced a brilliant display to win the recent Australian teams championships in Devonport, Tasmania.
The members of the winning SA team were Jason Mudge (captain), Justin Beard, Ross Hewitt, Alma Kushartanti and Bonny Wu.
The other states involved in the competition were NSW, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania.
Mudge said the victory was an excellent result and it was SA's first title since 2005.
"Even though we went into the competition seeded No. 1, there
was very strong competition especially from NSW and Victoria,'' Mudge said.
"The form of the men was highly consistent throughout the entire tournament.''
Mudge, who was No. 1 for SA throughout the tournament, was undefeated, without dropping a set.
"The form of the two girls improved as the tournament went on, culminating in an unexpected 3-1 win for Bonny Wu over her fancied NSW opponent in the final of the tournament.
"We defeated NSW 3-1 in the final and Victoria 2-2 rubbers and 9-6 games over Victoria in the semi-finals.''

The next national team championship is in 2010 and the venue will be either in the ACT or Alice Springs.

Profiles of the SA team members...

Men:
Jason Mudge, 36, plays for Next Generation - Memorial Drive and he is ranked No. 1 in
SA and No. 13 in Australia.

Mudge was a member of the Australian Masters team that defeated New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Trophy in Victoria.
Justin Beard is the SA No. 2 and No. 14 in Australia. He is the world No. 135 and he has been in the SA team for the past three years.

Ross Hewitt is the SA No. 3 and a former No. 15 in New Zealand. He was a Business SA graded winner this year.

Congratulations to Ross Hewitt a former New Zealand ranked player our Overall Champion - winning all three Events. At Karadinga he displayed solid consistant squash and will be a welcome addition to our Senior State Team competing at the National Teams Championships at the end of the month in Devonport. Andrew Wise proved too strong for Trae Menzies in the Div 2 final winning 15/10 15/10 15/4 both players are improving rapidly and have just returned from the Australian Junior Championships where they performed admirably.

Similarly two Southern Stingers  played off for the Division Three title with Matt Lokan just pipping Lucas Norman 11/15 16/14 16/14 15/13.

Squash Prepares For Crucial Bid

The Squash 2016 bid team is making final preparations for its presentation of the low-cost high-impact sport to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board in Lausanne, on Monday 15 June, in its endeavour to have Squash included in the Olympic Games from 2016.
All seven bidding sports will make presentations, and Squash believes that it has all the right attributes to make it worthy of a spot. The bid team will have 30 minutes to prove its worth to the Executive Board. The team of six will be led by IOC Member,
HRH Prince Tunku Imran of Malaysia, and will include N Ramachandran, President of the World Squash Federation (WSF), and women's world No1 Nicol David, along with three other players from across the globe.
As well as debuting a brand new video that highlights just how good Squash looks on television, the team will also talk about the impressive universality of squash, and what a low-cost addition to the Olympic Games the sport would be. Just two glass squash courts would be required to stage the competition, and the WSF has pledged to donate these to the host city. The courts can be placed almost anywhere and importantly their donation would be permanent, so Squash would leave a lasting legacy in
Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo.
The players will explain how an Olympic medal would be the highest honour within the sport; all the top squash athletes in the world have pledged to be there and to compete. Squash has champions in territories that are not typically successful at the Olympic Games, and is the only sport to have enjoyed World Champions, men and women, from every continent.
N Ramachandran, WSF President, said: "The team has put an enormous amount of work into Monday's presentation, which is a reflection of how important Olympic inclusion is to the whole of squash. We are looking forward to the opportunity to address the Executive Board and highlight the many ways in which squash fulfils the criteria to become an Olympic sport."
As part of the bidding process, Squash was invited to send a representative to the recent 4th International Athletes Forum, the meeting of the IOC Athletes' Commission in
Marrakech, Morocco. Alex Gough, CEO of the Professional Squash Association, attended on the sport's behalf and took part in valuable discussions with a variety of Olympic sports and IOC representatives.
"It was a really valuable experience, and I felt that we made some very good input across the board as well as learning from sports which have enjoyed Olympic status for years. In particular, squash players are very well represented by our professional bodies, and a number of sports were very interested in how we do this so successfully," said Gough.

Annie Au Defends Championship

Hong Kong' Annie Au will be back to defend her crown when the Clare Valley Australian Open squash championships are held in the South Australian wine growing town of Clare from July 14-19.

Au enjoyed a breakthrough victory when she came from two games down against top seed Kasey Brown in a thrilling finale to last year's tournament.

The 20-year-old entered the 2008 event as a rank outsider, but since then she has climbed to number 18 in the world and will be one of the favourites for this year's title.

Trying to stop her will be Brown, the 2006 champion and runner up in 2007 and 2008.

Brown, the 23-year-old from Taree in New South Wales, is the world number 13 and will be desperate to add her name to the famous trophy for a second time.

However, both women could be upstaged by the in-form Donna Urquhart, who claimed the Australian Closed title last weekend.

Urquhart has won two tournaments in 2009, following her success at the Top End Open in Darwin in May, and will go into the Australian Open full of confidence.

Other prominent entries so far include Queensland's Lisa Camilleri, rising New Zealand star Joelle King and Victoria's Amelia Pittock.

The international flavour of the tournament will also be boosted by an appearance from Czech player Olga Ertlova.

New Club Player Rankings
Team orders have been updated on the Matrix (www.squashmatrix.com). Your current team LISTED order (not matrix order) shall be used for rounds 13 Onwards. Teams who require re-order from round 13 have a ">" next to their team on the premiership list.

Current player rankings rounds 13 Onwards and Order of Merit, are on the Squash SA website and are the only document to be used for determining appropriate reserves and their order of merit within the team - don't rely on the Matrix, as ratings change on a daily basis. If someone does not appear on your club list, please contact Squash SA before they play.
