Squash SA on Pathway to Success

2010 has already proved to be an exciting year at Squash SA. New staff, new directions, new tournaments and a new attitude for a sport that remains a very popular social and competitive fitness pursuit for all ages across the state.

To continue to ensure a steady stream of champions, Squash SA has totally re-vamped its strategy and will shortly introduce several “Performance Pathway Programs”. The emphasis will be on ‘grass roots’ development and talent identification with qualified coaching, nutrition and sports psychology. Athletes remain well catered for with a series of annual grants available to support them with training, travel & coaching costs for their regular interstate and overseas commitments. Attached to this letter is a copy of the Squash SA ‘Pathways to Success’ Model to be implemented from the 6th October 2010.  To view the Model, please click here.

In May this year, the Board undertook extensive consultation with clubs, parents and athletes to review the existing SAAS (SA Academy of Squash) structure with the outcome being the need to shift the focus to grass roots participation in order to grow the talent pool. Squash SA is dedicated to providing pathways that support South Australian squash athletes to reach their full potential – both on & off the court - and achieve success at a local, state, national and international level.

The State Junior Development Squad will comprise up to 40 male & female athletes from around the state who will be required to attend regular group training sessions. Within the State Junior Development Squad will be the Emerging Athletes Grants Program which will target a total of 8 athletes (male and female) who demonstrate the potential and desire to become a professional. Grants of up to $3,000 per athlete per annum will be available to assist players with intensive coaching, interstate travel and court hire costs. The Talented Athletes Funding Program is for existing professionals and for those making the transition from the ‘Emerging’ to the ‘Talented’ athlete tiers. These players will be eligible to apply for part of a total funding pool of up to $12,000 per annum to assist them with their specific training & travel needs.

Squash SA wishes to thank Geoff Davenport for his years of service in his role as SAAS Head Coach. Geoff will finish his current role with Squash SA at the completion of the Australian Junior Championships held in Alice Springs this year. On behalf of the South Australian squash community we wish Geoff all the best for the future.

Two information sessions will be held to inform members of the changes. These are:

·         7pm, Wednesday, 8 September @ Prince Alfred College (meeting room TBC. Please RSVP)

·         12pm,  Sunday, 12 September @ South Adelaide Squash Centre (During Junior Skills Event)

Please ensure you RSVP to either meeting by calling Squash SA on 8277 2522 if you wish to attend.

If you have any questions on the new Squash SA’ Pathways to Success’ Model, please contact the Squash SA Pathways Manager on 8277 2522.

2010 Clare Valley Junior Squash Tournament

The Clare Squash Club held its annual junior squash tournament on the weekend, where young squash enthusiasts from around South Australia turned up for 2 days of exciting and high quality squash. 38 players entered the tournament with 14 travelling up from Adelaide, 7 from Burra, 2 from Ceduna, 1 from both Roxby Downs and Tanunda joining 13 from Clare.

In Division 1, top seeded Andrew Wise (Campbelltown) progressed through to this year’s final to face second seeded David Fumpson (PAOC). The final was of an extremely high standard with David triumphing 3-1. Lucas Norman (Norwood) defeated Matt Lokan (Karadinga) in the playoff for third.
Division 2 saw the two top seeds in Alyssa McInerney (Karadinga) and Zac Robertson (Adelaide Malibu) reach the final with Alyssa victorious 3-1. Tyler Goldstone (Adelaide Malibu) defeated Oliver Norman (Adelaide Malibu) in the playoff for third.

Top seeded Oliver Pearson (Clare) and his younger brother William contested this year’s Division 3 final. With two proud parents looking on, Oliver was able to hold out his brother to win 3-1. In the playoff for third, Trent Noble (Clare) defeated Sam Haydon (Clare).

Divisions 4 and 5 were contested by some of the tournaments younger players, but there was certainly a lot of potential seen in the matches.

Joe Wiblin (Clare) and Will Sumner (Burra) progressed to the Division 4 final, where Joe ran out the winner. Lauren Thomson (Clare) defeated Tayla Scholefield (Roxy Downs) in the playoff for third.

Division 5 was won by Sarah Thomson (Clare) who defeated Lauren McInerney (Clare) in the final with Sarah Salter finishing in third place.

Squash South Australia’s head coach travelled up to Clare in the weekend and said that he was very impressed with the standard of junior squash in Clare and would be coming back on a regular basis to keep an eye on the progress of the local players.

Grant Norman awarded Squash Australia's 2009 Volunteer of the Year

SQUASH SA has praised the work of Grant Norman, who has received Squash Australia's Volunteer of the Year award for 2009.
Norman, who recently moved from Clare to Adelaide, was instrumental in Clare hosting the Australian Open Squash Championships for three years from 2007-09.
He approached Squash SA with a plan to host the 2007 event in February of that year only five months before the Australian Open.
"Amazingly the glass court was set up and all ran smoothly,'' Squash SA's General Manager Phil Sinnott said.

"Grant coordinated the Clare volunteers and was involved in the budget, grandstand set up, glass court set up, hall heating, PA sound system, event dinner, bus hire, transport to and from Adelaide, accommodation for players and finding local sponsors.''
Mr Sinnott said that Norman was Squash SA's local connection for all things relating to the Australian Open in Clare.
"Each year saw improvements and in 2009 the Australian Open featured an international field of quality players, epic finals and a relaxed and enjoyable country atmosphere."
Mr Sinnott said that the players really appreciated the enthusiasm and the "nothing was too much trouble" attitude of the volunteers.
But some players are disappointed that after three years the Australian Open is moving away from Clare.
"This year the AO has joined the Super Series and moves to Canberra in August.
"The world's best are expected to participate.
"Grant Norman and Clare Squash Club have been instrumental in keeping the Australian Open a major event on the squash calendar at a time when sponsors were finding it difficult to support sporting events.''
During his time at the Clare Squash Club, he was president, junior squash program coordinator and club coach, all on a voluntary basis.
"Grant influenced the transformation of squash in Clare to rebuild in numbers and to sustain a strong supportive club culture,'' Squash SA newly elected President, Mark Goldstone said.
"It is the most progressive and successful squash club in South Australia and likely to be the most progressive club in regional country Australia.
"The club has 100 seniors and 55 juniors playing regularly.''
Norman, an accountant by profession, is a handy squash player capable of playing in the top grade in Adelaide.
His brother is Ross Norman, a former world champion. Grant's two sons Lucas, 17, and Oliver, 15, have continued the family dynasty and are both very promising juniors.
